Werder Bremen woke this morning to the sad news of the death of Dr. Franz Böhmert, chairman of the Werder board. Dr. Böhmert , as one of the essential building blocks in the success of Werder Bremen football club takes with him a substantial element of the history of the Green-Whites.
As club doctor between 1963 and 1970 he brought aside from an exceptional medical ability, also a great deal of personality and a friend to a great generation of players and played his part in Werders first championship win of 1965. Dr. Böhmert was voted President in 1970 during a difficult sporting and financial period for the club where he used his influence to steady the Werder ship. With the introduction of Otto Rehhagel and Willi Lemke, a more successful period began at the club in which Dr. Böhmert through his inteligence, level-headedness, his compromise and his ability to relieve conflict, was able to guide Werder back to the top. Dr. Böhmert also played his part on both the national and international football stage. On more than one occassion he took control of the delegation of the German national team and became involved in the ever more decisive negotiations with television broadcasters. Thanks to his achievements in German football he was made the first Honorary Member of the German Football Federation (DFB) by the representitive body. The greatest triumphs of his Presidency included three times DFB-cup winners (1991, 1994 and 1999), two German championships (1998, 1993) and one European cup winners cup (1992)
