OR ……换Dalembert?

Bonzi Wells

Rumor Conjuring

Is There More To Bonzi Deal?

By David Lord-- DallasBasketball.com

It\'s a slow day, so let\'s conjure up a Mavs rumor that might make sense:

Things are really quiet lately at Mavs headquarters, but an NBA move among other teams occurred Friday that made us sit up and take notice. Here\'s our disclaimer: what we relate here is our attempt to add 2 and 2 together, and tell you what 4 might look like. (And again, it\'s a slow day!)

What happened among other teams Friday is that Memphis agreed to trade Bonzi Wells to Sacramento in a 3-way that also involved Utah. The aspect that caught our eye was the resulting roster in Memphis, and potential implications for the Mavs.

Here are the facts:

1. In exchange for Wells, the Grizzlies will receive 4 players.

2. This increases their roster to well over 15, counting draft picks. If you add in the fact that they have been open to sign-and-trade possibilities for Earl Watson, they may be looking at as many as 19 players to squeeze within a 15 man roster limit.

3. During Memphis negotiations before the trade, mention was made that the Mavs had been talking seriously with them. It was presumably about Wells, but could other things have been discussed as well (or instead)?

4. Dallas has a slew of empty roster slots which would permit them (if needed) to absorb several players in a 1-for-2 (or more) trade.

5. Dallas also has a player they would love to move (Finley) with a big enough contract to allow several to come the other way in a trade.

6. Memphis has a PG they have unsuccessfully been able to deal (Williams), plus other perhaps-expendable players that they might be willing to part with if it greases the wheels to move Williams.

With the Wells trade, one aspect puzzled us and made us look for explanations: why did the Grizzlies opt to take back 4 players for Wells when they already have players running out the gills? They could just as easily have received only 2 (Jackson and Ostertag) - but instead they included the Jazz and took 2 more players. Might the Mavs and Memphis already have been exploring something like a Williams/Wright package (or some other multi-player combo) for Finley, that will reduce the Grizzlies roster? The salary numbers work for Williams/Wright (as well as with many other combos from Memphis) for Finley, and there are lots of ways for both teams to end up with something they might like while getting rid of a problem.

We admittedly dont know that anything is happening here, but the combo of the whispers of trade talks between the teams, combined with the fit of needs, makes our antenna go up. Keep an eye on the possibilities here, because both teams are going to do SOMETHING before its all said and done - and it could be with each other.

well to good news

Posted on Mon, Jul. 25, 2005

By JOHN MILLER

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

FRISCO - Josh Powell didn\'t know how to react when he heard that he was about to reach his dream of playing in the NBA for the Mavericks.

On the court, it was business as usual for the power forward.

Powell found out Saturday that he was offered a two-year deal with the Mavericks.

He responded with a dominating effort in the final summer-league game for the Mavericks, as they defeated the U.S. Under-21 National Team 102-86 on Sunday at the Deja Blue Arena at Dr Pepper StarCenter in Frisco.

\"For me, every time I\'m on the floor, it\'s about business,\" Powell said.

\"Even if I didn\'t have the contract, I would have still played the same. I just want to approach it and have the attitude to just be consistent.\"

Powell had 20 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. The exhibition game was part of the opening weekend of the 2005 Global Games, which began on Saturday and end this Saturday.

It was the end of a strong summer league for Powell, which led to the two-year deal, likely to be signed on Thursday, the first day free agents can sign.

This is Powell\'s third attempt to make an NBA team.

He left North Carolina State after his sophomore year in 2003 and tried out with the Mavs that summer.

Last summer, he tried out with Seattle and Miami.

\"It\'s wonderful,\" Powell said of landing the deal with the Mavs. \"You\'ve been working so hard for two years, and for it to finally happen, it\'s just a great thing.\"

Powell set the tone early with his inside presence.

He scored nine of the first 17 points, including one stretch of seven straight points, helping the Mavericks take a 17-5 lead. They never led by less than eight points the rest of the game.

\"He has great potential,\" Mavericks summer-league coach Rolando Blackman said.

\"He\'s a young guy and he has physical talents that can help a team like ours. The important factor for him now is how fast can he learn and how consistent can he be to be able to help us win.\"

Point guard David Logan led the scoring for the Mavericks with 21 points. Logan, a rookie from the University of Indianapolis, a Division II school, said he is close to signing a deal to play in Italy next season.

DJ Mbenga, who was with the Mavs last season, scored 11 points and had seven rebounds in 11 minutes. Pavel Podkolzin, a first-round pick last season, scored seven points for the Mavs in 26 minutes.

Former North Crowley and Kansas standout Keith Langford scored 11 points.

Aaron Brooks of Oregon had 11 points and Taj Gray of Oklahoma 10 for USA. J.J. Redick of Duke had six.
