<TDcolSpan=2>Werder Bremen impressively returned to winning ways after going four games in a row without a three pointer. An Aaron Hunt hat trick saw the Green-Whites beat VfL Bochum 3:0 (1:0) and return to second place in the league table, just three points adrift of leaders FC Schalke 04.<BR><BR>Trainer Thomas Schaaf made three changes to the side which drew 2:2 with Borussia Mönchengaldbach last Sunday. Clemens Fritz returned to the right side of the back four in place of Peter Niemeyer. Jurica Vranjes took the place of the injured Tim Borowski in midfield while Aaron Hunt got the nod to join Miroslav Klose in attack ahead of Hugo Almeida.<BR><BR><B>Stuttered start</B><BR><BR>Werder made a determined start but were unable to create much against an extremely disciplined and compact VfL side. It was a free-kick after eleven minutes which lead to the Green-Whites getting their first sight of goal. Bochum keeper Jaroslav Drobny was only able to parry a Naldo hammer from 27 meters but Klose couldn’t make a clean contact with the loose ball and sent his effort skywards.<BR><BR>The VfL defence closed down the direct line to goal well and from Werder’s side there was too little action out on the flanks. Bochum, who played with Greek Theofanis Gekas as a loan striker, were almost exclusively focused on defending their own box in the first half and throughout the first 45 minutes failed to produce a single shot on Tim Wiese’s goal.<BR><BR><B>Vranjes sets up the lead</B><BR><BR>There was absolutely no questioning that the home side deserved to take the league when they eventually broke down the Bochum defence after 25 minutes. Jurica Vranjes played a perfectly timed pass which saw Miroslav Klose break away toward goal. The German international kept his cool as Drobny advanced on him and then passed square to Aaron Hunt, who had burst fee in the centre, and the young striker only needed to roll the ball into an empty net.<BR><BR>With the cushion of a 1:0 lead, the home side forced their guests back permanently into their own half for the rest of the first period but failed to take advantage of chances for Klose (40’), Vranjes and Mertesacker (43’) as well as Diego (44’) and Frings (45’) to extend the lead.<BR><BR><B>Slouched second half</B><BR><BR>The Green-Whites appeared to lose their momentum after the break and Bochum were able to free themselves more readily, although the only half chance came as e-Werder man Christoph Dabrowski got a shot in (53’). The visitors never really looked like getting past the tactically stunning defensive duo of Per Mertesacker and Naldo.<BR><BR>It took until the 68th minute before a 40,156 strong crowd at the Weser Stadium saw the next true chance for Werder as Diego forced Drobny into a punched save from the feisty Brazilians distance effort. Just four minutes later the Werder playmaker was busy again, this time setting up the home sides second. Diego fed Hunt, who had broken free in the box, and the 20 year old played through the legs of marker Anther Yahia whose slight deflection took the ball out of the reach of the keeper – 2:0.<BR><BR><B>Hunt’s hat-trick</B><BR><BR>Just minutes later the young striker notched up the first hat-trick of his young Bundesliga career. Picking up another perfect pass from Diego, Hunt slotted the ball past Drobny to make it 3:0. The hosts could have extended their lead yet further, especially through chances from Diego late on (76’, 83’) but it was a comfortable win for Bremen who have now closed the gap to put increased pressure on Schalke in the battle for the league title.<BR></TD></TR></TABLE>
