Germany hammered poor South Africa 10-1 at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago on Wednesday 8 September, collecting the largest win in the history of the women’s U-17 finals. Kyra Malinowski scored four goals to bring her overall tally to seven as the Germans have signalled their intent with a pair of monumental wins in their first two matches of Trinidad and Tobago 2010.

Strong, fast, organised and relentless. These adjectives can describe any German team at any age level, and it certainly applies to their girls here in the Caribbean. Within 30 minutes of their second contest against South Africa, they were 5-0 up and the young Bantwana were scratching their heads and wondering what kind of tropical hurricane had hit them.

Attacking in waves, and with four players in advanced positions, Ralf Peter’s team took the lead in the 12th minute, the talented left-sided winger Lena Lotzen providing first strike as she had against Mexico. After cutting inside and leaving her marked for dead, she curled a beautiful right-footed shot into the top corner. The next goal was only seven minutes in coming with Kyra Malinowski picking up her fourth goal of the finals when she finished off a nice piece of interplay between Isabella Schmid and Lena Petermann. Then, in the 24th and 25th minutes, Melanie Leupolz added her name to the scoresheet with a pair of opportunistic strikes.

Malinowski then bagged her fifth goal of the finals with a cool finish from close range in the 29th minute before before Petermann and Malinowski again struck to make it 5-0. The shell-shocked South Africans managed to pull one back, a near-post header by Jermaine Seoposenwe reducing the deficit to 5-1. But the Germans were only angered by the impudent affront to their dominance and added four more before the interval through Petermann (2) and Malinowski, who sealed her hat-trick. Seoposenwe then scored again, this time in the wrong goal, with seconds to go in the half. The shock was registered on the faces of the South African players as they trudged down the tunnel at the halftime break on the sharp end of a 9-1 scoreline.

The Europeans picked up right where they left off after the break, Malinowski grabbing her fourth in the 57th minute with an unmarked header at the back post. And they just kept pressing. Malinowski must have taken pity on the Africans with five minutes to go, hitting over an open goal to a roar of good-natured laughter from the crowd. The Germans are now virtually assured of a place in the quarter-finals, owing to their massive goal difference. Coach Peter will now have the luxury of tinkering with his line-up in the third Group B game against Korea Republic on 12 September. The South Africans, for their part, are out of the competition and will be playing only for pride when they take on Mexico that same day.
