Hyypiä: Well, we could talk about the very important victory which we won in Frankfurt. We could keep Munich at a distance and catch up a little on Dortmund. But we shouldn’t look at the table too often. We need to focus on the next match completely. We gained the right amount of self-esteem in Frankfurt for that.

layer of the Match“ by the football magazine „Kicker“. The tabloid “Bild” said you were world class. Strong in defence, assisted a goal, hit the post yourself. Was it your best performance this season?

Hyypiä: I don’t know. I am just happy that things went so well for us. Concerning my own performance, I prefer others to judge that. And if my coach is happy with me, that’s enough for me. I think it is extremely difficult to grade 22 players in a fair way. It’s a delicate task.

You had to miss some games this season because you were injured. Do you start thinking about your age when you are inj

Hyypiä: No, not at all. I’m not injured more often than when I was younger. My ankle injury could have also happened to an 18-year-old. It had nothing to do with my age. It is true though, that it takes longer to recover as you get older. I may have made the mistake to have started training too early after my foot injury. I am 37 now. I need to dose the amount of training differently to younger players and maybe do one or two sessions less to be top fit for the games. But I am in a great shape. I had good measured values in our tests for stamina and speed.

You are in your second season for Bayer 04: If you compare both campaigns – what development has the team taken?

Hyypiä: Our squad has a lot more quality than last season. Who just have to look at our bench at the games. There are more good players in the squad. But that’s the way it has to be with all the extra European matches. We need to be able to rotate. And that’s exactly what we do. Our coach is spoilt for choice. And because we don’t have many injured players at the moment there are enough tactical alternatives.

It wouldn’t be wise to judge by the table and say the second is playing against the second last – a clear result. It’s not clear at all. VfB have a very good squad – a lot better than their ranking in the table. Maybe their coach Bruno Labbadia can motivate them even more against his old club.
