Good question, both fans really not too fond of each others teams, this is mainly because both are northern cities and close from each other, just 100 KM, the people from Hamburg , the much bigger city with 2 mio people in comparison with Bremen with just 630.000, always joke about Bremen, like one statement from them : The best thing in Bremen is the A1 ( highway) to Hamburg. In fact HSV fans are tough once, a lot of hooligans, Werder has a very different kind of fan commuinity, a very different mood and high spirits, whether Werder plays well or not, people say , the Weder fans are the most loyal ones in the Bundesliga.
From the history, of the games Werder against HSV, most of the time Werder won, this makes the fans of the HSV very jealous. Last season boith teams played against each other, if i remember correctly, 6 times in one season, Bundesliga, UEFA Cup, Europacup and Werder , i think won 4 games, with one drawer and one loss.
For HSV, this is the only team in the liga, which never dropped out of the 1st league, all other did in between.
Coming weekend, HSV plays against the 2nd Hamburg based club, FC St.Pauli, both fan blocks really hate each other, and therefore the games was rescheduled to sunday afternoon, in order to minimize the risk that fans get too drunk and perhaps cause trouble.
