Rank 14 – their position in the table says everything about this special situation Werder Bremen is in. The club was never ranked worse than 13[sup]th[/sup] (1997/98) at the end of the season in their last 29 years in the Bundesliga. Before that they spent one year in the second league. During their time in Germany’s top flight they won three championships and five cup titles. Now they could not win any of their last five games. They only won two of their last fifteen fixtures. Further the team had to deal with many injuries amongst the players: Bremen’s best new player Wesley injured his thigh in November. The light injury turned out to be worse. The Brazilian has been injured for three months. Defender Naldo will probably miss the entire season. Goal getter Claudio Pizarro has been injured on and off. The remaining top players are not doing well. For example, Per Mertesacker’s mistakes led to two goals for HSV.
