Sceptics warned him not to leave too early for a club like Real Madrid, but Mesut Ozil, the National Team's quiet playmaker, went on his way.

At first glance, his time in Madrid hasn't changed him. He wears the jersey of Real Madrid now, of course - as though it had been invented for him. Otherwise, he is still the quiet young man who, in spite of his Spanish lessons in the new language rarely says more than a "Buenos dias" - "Good day." He is rarely seen in the city, and spends his time barricaded among other celebrities in his new house in the suburb of La moraleja. But when aficionados in cafes and bars in Madrid speak about "Ozil", they cluck their tongues and it means only compliments for the German National player. And in a town that has seen the most famous players in the world - the stars of the century - that is quite remarkable.

No Friend To Big Words
In Madrid, Mesut Ozil is compared with the most famous players on the planet. With world footballers Lionel Messi or Zinedine Zidane who last won the Golden Ball in 2003（注：2003年的不是金球奖，齐达内最后一次获世界足球先生荣誉才是在2003年，唯一一次欧洲金球奖获于1998年）. What few realize - in Bremen he was already nicknamed Messi by his colleagues because he had a similar style of fast dribbling. Also his perfect technique - as scouts from Spain and England discovered - when he loses only 2 balls out of 10 in tight spaces. His perception is that of an excellent chess player. And like Messi, Ozil doesn't advertise himself. He speaks with the ball.

Memories of an Idol
Because he plays in Madrid and not in Barcelona, the Madridistas prefer the parallels with Zinedine Zidane - even though he is an earlier world footballer. In the New Year, Marca nicknamed him "the little Zidane." Perhaps it isn't so wrong - as a child, Zidane was Ozil's idol. He even copied some of his tricks as a teenager. One, he explains, goes like this: "You juggle the ball between the left and right sole turn away from the opponent so quickly that he can't stop you."

Against All Advice: A Move To Madrid
And yet there were, when he accepted Real Madrid's offer in the summer of 2010, many skeptical voices. How can you trust this little fellow - when you have drag every word out of his nose by force - in spite of his good World Championship in South Africa it wasn't supposed to be the best step. Mattias Sammer, Sporting Director of the DFB warned him - "A young player has no business going to a top International club." Also Werder's Sporting Director Klaus Allofs would have preferred to have kept him longer in Bremen. He wasn't quite a number 10 yet, thought Allofs. "He is an exceptionally good player, but he doesn't direct our game."

A Helper, Not a Preener
It's the same at Real - Ozil doesn't yet direct the game. He's still too young and he is better at helping - brilliantly helping - his famous teammates. They might be called Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso or Angel di Maria. Nevertheless, his starting place is practically secure. His fellow players, to use his own words, "have long since realized that I can set the scene for them." ["längst gemerkt, dass ich sie auch in Szene setzen kann."] Ozil runs a great deal. It would be impossible to think of him as a "Diva." And Ronaldo himself, supposedly so egotistical, lets the German take the occasional free kick, which is a sign of his increasing prestige among his colleagues.

Mesut Ozil is a new, international type of player. One that can prevail anywhere. The immigrant background of this devout Muslim is only a theme in Germany and Turkey - for Angela Merkel, for example, who congratulates him after a game with the National Team against Turkey in the dressing room - or for Turkish President Gul, who announces on the front page of the Suddeutsche Zeitung that "It is good, that Ozil plays for Germany."
五、两个选项，一心所向

A Formative Period in the Monkey Cage
For Ozil, childhood memories are almost solely about football. He played in Gelsenkirchen with Bosnians, Lebanese, Turks and Germans on a football pitch known as the "Monkey Cage" on Olga Street. "I enjoyed growing up among different cultures," he says. ["Ich habe es genossen, mit den vielen Kulturen aufzuwachsen."] Mesut Ozil knows exactly what makes him German though: Discipline. He learned it as a child and now it helps him in Spain.

Mourinho Likes a Street-footballer
For many German-Turks he is an example. He shows that you can succeed in a career. Kose Mourinho, his coach at Real Madrid, particularly likes Ozil because he is a street footballer - a species that is actually dying out in Germany - where there are too many cars and not enough children playing. That he is a real street soccer player was something that audiences could see in a moment that was captured on television before a Bundesliga game when Ozil repeatedly knocked a small item up with his foot and prevented it from falling to the ground. This tiny detail betrayed him casually: Ozil had spit out his chewing gum - a thousand times more difficult to keep in the air than a ball.
七、花式足球，穆帅折服

A Super Star Announcement (Prediction)
One person had already suspected that Ozil might one day "be the next German Super Star". It was Michael Kulm, his coach at Rot-Weiss-Essen who declared that "Mesut will never be contented, he will always work hard - because of his character, his calmness and his humility.
八、超级巨星，指日可待
