<>Jan Ullrich

28.10.2004/ This is what the cycling experts had to say about the route details of the 92nd Tour de France which was presented by race director Jean Marie Leblanc on Thursday in Paris.

Jan Ullrich (T-Mobile Team Captain): The 19 km time trial at the opening is ideal fort he specialists. I will try everything to be in fron right from the start, although the course is quite short. I am very delighted Tour director Jean-Marie Leblanc should pay tribute to the enormous interest of the German bike fans.

Walter Godefroot (T-Mobile Team Manager): The prologue will be replaced by a single time trial. That adds something special to the big loop. This time, the stages in the Alps are not that difficult, but the stages in the Massif Central are really tough..

Ivan Basso (CSC pro): \"It\'s a difficult Tour, as always. But, first of all, my goal in 2005 is to win the Giro d\'Italia. Then we\'ll see how things go for the Tour. It\'s important for me to ride two grand tours next season. I\'m now entering the important years of my career.\"

Alexander Vinokourov (T-Mobile pro): I dont care if the Tour is easy or tough, if the time trials are at the beginning or at the end. To me its important to participate at all, not being forced to watch due to an injury like this year.

Laurent Jalabert (ex-pro, now French TV commentator): \"This is a Tour for all-around riders that could suit a man like Vinokourov.\"

Olaf Ludwig (Team Spokesman and future T-Mobile Team manager): Germany can be happy. Having the Tour in your own country is always something very special. Given that there is no prologue, the sprinters may have little hope for the yellow jersey in the first days. Furthermore the number of mountain arrivals is reduced. That doesnt make the Tour easier, though. Especially the stages in the Vosges are dangerous. To sum it up: Not an easy, but a nice course.

Laurent Fignon (ex-pro and two-time winner): \"This will be a Tour again dominated by Armstrong if his opponents ride like they usually do. To change things, they will have to show more imagination and take a few risks.\"

Mario Kummer (T-Mobile Team Sports Director): I like the course, it is very balanced. However, it remains to be seen, whose kind of course it is in the end.

Jean-Marie Leblanc (Tour director): We have opted for Germany, since the interest of the fans is very big.

Heinz Fenrich (Mayor of Karlsruhe): Every Euro invested in the Tour comes back ten times. We want to compete with Freiburg and Saarbrücken and, where a million people were there in 2002.

Eddy Merckx (five-times Tour winner from Belgium): On paper, the Tour 2005 is not as tough as the one 2004. There are less time trial kilometres to ride, and the mountains, too, look less demanding to me. This indicates it may come to an open fight. But: Should Lance Armstrong be in a similar shape like this year, I dont see anyone being able to beat him.

Hans-Michael Holczer (Team Gerolsteiner manager): The ling opening time trial should suit a man like Danilo Hondo. With a decent result, he can put himself in a good position to win the yellow jersey in the stages to come. What hes capable of doing in a time trial, he has shown with his win at the Four Days of Dunkirk.

Danilo Hondo (Team Gerolsteiner): I wont disagree with Mister Holczers opinion. Ive always done well at the medium long races this season. As for the yellow jersey, its not unrealistic. However, there are many candidates for it, such as Brad McGee or Stuart O\'Grady.

Many fans used this opportunity to post their questions to the T-Mobile team\'s manager in waiting. The questions ranged from the make-up of the 2005 team to the role of Jan Ullrich\'s personal mentor Rudy Pevenage. Here we have assembled a summary of some of the most important issues that popped up.

Many fans are already looking ahead to next season, with particular interest in the T-Mobile roster at the Tour de France and Ludwig\'s thoughts on the ProTour. Ludwig can\'t currently speculate on the make-up of the Tour roster, because inevitably a lot of factors will come into play between now and July. It was equally difficult for him to speculate at this point in time, who from Jan Ullrich, Andreas Klöden and Alexander Vinokourov will assume the captain\'s role in France. \"We have three riders, who have made the podium in the last few years. They all know that podium finishes could not be possible without full support from the whole team. The best rider will get the support.\"

Ludwig welcomes ProTour
The former sprinter is positive in his support for the new Pro Tour. \"Basically, I support the Pro Tour. This level of reform was necessary. But when such sweeping changes are introduced, then it is inevitable that small issues will emerge that in turn will need to be corrected. But you have got to start somewhere\", said Ludwig. When asked about the specific race plans for the coming season, the ex-pro answered: \"We have to compete in all Pro Tour races. Besides that, we will see which races are important to us (eg. Henninger Turm, Tour of Austria) and which fit nicely into our schedule.\"

The questions about the top T-Mobile riders Ullrich, Klöden und Erik Zabel came thick and fast. Many fans wanted to know if Ullrich and Klöden had already returned to training. Ludwig revealed that the two will return from their joint holidays at the end of this week and then they kick-start their training. Ludwig was unable to say whether or not Zabel would figure in next year\'s Tour roster; that won\'t be made known until next June.

A new recruit?
Many fans asked if any another rider would yet be recruited to the team for next season \"It is possible that we might sign up a 28th rider for next season. It is not a priority, but we still have the possibility to do this\", was Ludwig\'s answer, which will do nothing to dampen speculation. \"But I am convinced that our current squad will to keep magenta at the business end of the peloton next year.\"

Many fans are also interested in Rudy Pevenage\'s future role in the Bonn-based team. \"He will not work for us, as has often been reported in the media - that is not how it is. Rudy will not be a directeur sportif for the T-Mobile Team, but we will maintain a close and intensive collaboration with him\", said Ludwig on this issue.

<>11.11.德国电讯车队在新赛季将继续使用捷安特

<>2004/ Pro cyclists are real \"Kilometre monsters\", with the T-Mobile riders gobbling up about 40,000 kilometres each year - that\'s basically the equivalent of cycling the circumference of the globe. Endurance athletes require bikes that can go the distance, and can withstand the demands imposed by the cobblestones of Flanders, the grueling climbs of the Tour de France or explosive sprint finishes.

Riders want a frame that is stiff and light, while also absorbing road shock to make 6 hours a day in the saddle more comfortable. With this in mind, the magenta squad are now using innovative high-tech all-carbon bike frames supplied by Giant.

The Giant carbon composite bicycle frames tip the balance at an extremely lightweight 6,9 Kilos. It can\'t get any lighter - the world cycling federation (UCI) has imposed a minimum weight of 6.8 Kilos.

A design for strength and stiffness
It is important that carbon fibre\'s light weight doesn\'t compromise other desired characteristics like strength and stiffness. \"In explosive sprints a lot of force comes down on the handlebars and pedals\", says T-Mobile fast man Erik Zabel. To improve acceleration and to prevent the bike flexing under hard pedaling, Giant developed its Compact Road design. The design involves sloping the top tube downward towards the rear of the bike, for added rigididy - a compromise that helped to convince Zabel to make the switch from aluminuim to carbon. Giant\'s sloping geometry design also means that the T-Mobile riders are riding bikes with the lowest possible frame size - the lower centre of gravity allows for more solid cornering.

\"The frame is all carbon, which has two major advantages over our previous frame design. For one, it makes the bike lighter and a lot stiffer. That lets me transfer the power from my thighs a lot more directly onto the pedals because nothing is lost along the way,\" says Jan Ullrich.

Smooth and efficient shifting
Leading Japanese bike parts maker Shimano supplies the components for shifting, braking and pedaling on the Giant T-Mobile bikes. T-Mobile riders find Shimano\'s Dura-Ace system of racing components to be smooth and easy-to-use. The Shimano integrated brake/shift levers allow for smooth and efficient shifting, even on descents and on tight corners. \"It required adjusting to at first, but now using it is like second nature,\" says Jan Ullrich about the integrated brake/shift levers.

Wheels for all roads
The magenta racers use Shimano wheels that vary according to the road conditions. On bad roads (Spring Classics) they race on conventional aluminium wheels, otherwise carbon fibre wheels are used. In this case the rims, spokes and hub are all made from lightweight carbon-composite.

Innovative Italian manufacturer Deda supply the handlebars and stems, with Erik Zabel and Steffen Wesemann favouring lightweight carbon models. Indeed, the two experiment-minded T-Mobile veterans can\'t get new innovations built and tested on their racing rigs fast enough.

Ulli休假回来了!
<>After a post-season vacation, Jan Ullrich has returned to his home along the Bodensee in Switzerland with his companion Gabi and their baby Sarah Maria. Ulli has been talking with his mentor Rudy Pevenage, who recently explained Jan\'s state of mind. \"We\'ll be getting together soon to talk about Jan\'s winter preparation\", explained Pevenage. \"Jan is relaxing now but as he\'s done in year past, he will go to South Africa for the month of December. Normally I\'ll go with him.\"
<>With Jan\'s main career rival Lance Armstrong a 50/50 chance to start next year\'s Tour, if the American isn\'t there, Ullrich will likely start as favourite despite his disappointing fourth place Tour finish this year. But Pevenage isn\'t certain that the American won\'t be at the Tour. \"eople are talking about one chance in two that Lance will be at the Tour. If it\'s true, that would be the first time....and that would change everything. Because there wouldn\'t be one team that would control everything, at least at the beginning of the Tour until the pecking order is decided. As well, with the absence of the number one favourite, the race would be more open. \"If Lance decides not to ride the Tour after the first of the year, five riders could be candidates to win.\"
<>evenage named Vinokourov, Basso, Heras, Cunego and Klöden as potential rivals for Jan The Man, but also explained that, \"I know that if Jan wins the Tour again, he wants to beat Lance Armstrong!\"
