Terry puts Mavs in high gear early

oint guard shows off maturity, consistency against Grizzlies

[By David Moore / The Dallas Morning News]

He\'s no Steve Nash.

And that\'s OK.

Jason Terry will never be named the league\'s Most Valuable Player, an award the former Maverick is about to win for the second consecutive season. He may never play in an All-Star game.

But he comes up big in big games. We saw it one year ago during the playoffs and we\'re seeing it again.

What Terry has done to Chucky Atkins in the first two games of this series is illegal in 48 states and Canada. I\'m not sure what\'s on the books in North and South Dakota.

Terry wasn\'t the headliner in Wednesday\'s 15-point victory over Memphis. That distinction belonged to Dirk Nowitzki.

But the point guard got the Mavericks into their offense early and set the tempo. He finished with 16 points and a nine assists (a playoff career-high) to ship his team to the FedEx Forum Saturday with a 2-0 lead.

\"He started off the game pushing it,\" Mavericks coach Avery Johnson said.

\"J.T. has just come so far. Man, he\'s come so far. I don\'t have to scream at him that much, like I did in Orlando.\"

Terry and Erick Dampier were the targets of Johnson\'s highly publicized tirade after a loss to the Magic in late March. Terry didn\'t pout. He didn\'t go back at Johnson. He took what his coach said to heart and kept going.

Terry is one of Johnson\'s favorites because of his confidence. He calls him a Chauncey Billups-type point guard.

In case you weren\'t sure, that\'s a huge compliment. Nowitzki calls Terry one of the best shooters in the league when he gets his feet set.

Terry is explosive and competitive, but he\'s not always consistent. Chances are good Johnson mentioned that between expletives on that March evening.

Again, we refer to last year\'s playoffs. Terry exploded for more than 30 points in three games. In the other 10, he scored 17 points or less. He failed to reach double-digits in two of those games.

\"I think my game is more under control,\" Terry said. \"I\'ve learned more about the point guard position from Avery. I\'m more hands on about the time to score and about leadership. I\'ve grown and matured.\"

It shows. Consistency hasn\'t been a problem to open this series. And neither has the Mavericks\' tempo.

The Grizzlies defense is all about pace. Force the tempo, get the game going faster than Memphis likes, and its league-leading defense breaks down. That\'s what Terry did in the first quarter when the Mavericks were 11-of-15 from the field and scored 32 points.

\"That\'s the key, play at our tempo,\" Johnson said. \"We don\'t play as fast as we used to, but we\'re at our best when we get out in transition. That\'s what we want to do when we get a chance.

\"That\'s when we feel pretty comfortable.\"

Terry spent the first five years of his career in Atlanta, which is an NBA wasteland. Now, he\'s one of the key players in the Mavericks\' championship drive.

He\'s not about to back down from the challenge.

In that respect, he\'s every bit as competitive as Steve Nash.

\"What they\'re going to do, we don\'t know and we really don\'t care,\" Terry said of how Memphis might adjust for Game 3. \"It\'s all about us.\"

|
