>With Manuel Fischer (VfB Stuttgart), Bjrn Kopplin (FC Bayern Mnchen) and Marko Marin (Borussia Mnchengladbach), three German junior players have been nominated for the European All-Stars. The continent’s best will face an African continental team at the UEFA Meridian Cup in Barcelona’s famous Nou Camp stadium on February 27 and March 1, 2007. All three juniors, when playing for the team of DFB-coach Bernd Stöber, had reached the U 17 European Championships semifinal last season.

>“It does speak volumes about the excellent work on the club- and DFB-level, that three players from one age group were selected to an European team”, said Matthias Sammer, the Technical Director of the German Football Association (DFB). “This selection validates the steps we have taken to boost the development of our juniors. I’m sure these games in Barcelona will be very special for the kids, really an unforgettable experience. But for all three, this will only be the first step in their development.” Former Spanish national coach Inaki Sáez will be in charge of the European all-stars.

>The Meridian Cup, staged every two years, was first brought to life in 1997, based on a cooperation between the European and African Federations, UEFA and CAF.
