<TD 20px; PADDING-TOP: 10px\" colSpan=2>Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf was quick to explain that „Statistics can be deceptive”, and made it very clear that his sides record against VfL Bochum has little significance. Still, Werder’s past meetings with Saturday’s (03.03.2007) opponent have been exceedingly impressive. The Green-Whites have won 37 of their 59 Bundesliga clashes with the club from the Ruhr Valley and in the last 20 years have only lost three of the sides 41 matches. This record is particularly consistent at the Weser Stadiu, where Bochum have never taken all three points.

Thomas Schaaf went on to explain that “Even with 60% of the possession you can still lose 3:0”, a statistic that he has impressed upon his team this week and set about “Working resolutely in training.” Energetic training is certainly not a contrast to the ‘English-Week’ which his side have this week been spared. Schaaf: “An amount of the tension can be released, you’ve got more time for treatment and focusing on injured players as well as to discuss particular issues.” ‘Energetic’ comes from ‘Energy’, - energy which the Werder squad could tank up on this week and had to do so if they are to put an end to the trend of recent weeks and turn their thoughts back to the top of the league again.

Just recharging the batteries will not suffice though, Werdr will have to return to playing their style of football. Thomas Schaaf saw signs of that flashing out in Mönchengladbach last Sunday, and hopes to see a longer lasting example on Saturday. “As for long periods against Gladbach, we don’t want to be too passive against Bochum, instead we wish to be active and assertive whilst imposing ourselves in finishing.” At the same time the defence of their own goal should not be forgotten, which Schaaf again reminded his players on Thursday: “Our defensive qualities were not satisfactory recently, there is no other way of putting that. We were able to defend ourselves but just didn’t produce enough.”

Schaaf is expecting the leagues tables fifteenth placed side to react with quick, counter attacking football which has caused other Bundesliga sides problems so far this season: “Bochum play a freer and stronger game away from home as they do in their own stadium.” VfL have notched up eleven of their 24 points on their travels. Marcel Koller’s side beat Hanover 2:0 in Lower Saxony and have avoided defeat three times in a row in their most recent outings (0:0 in Munich and Cottbus and a 3:1 win in Bielefeld). Schaaf has mentioned having particular respect for Bochum’s Greek striker Theofanis Gekas who has scored ten of VfL’s goals this season. Bochum’s second best scorer will not be available on Saturday, Zvjezdan Misimovic picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in last weekend’s 2:2 draw with Aachen and is suspended for the tie in Bremen. His replacement is as yet unclear with Tommy Bechmann, Joel Epalle and Ivo Ilicevic all offering alternatives. Defenders Christoph Dabrowski, Benjamin Lense and Oliver Schröder all took it easy in training this week but are all available to play on Saturday.

Back to statistics: In the first half of the season at the rewirpowerSTADION, Werder notched up the second highest away win in the clubs history with a 6:0 drubbing of Bochum (also 6:0 previously against SC Freiburg and Suttgarter Kickers). It was a particularly impressive second half with goals from Hunt, Schulz, Vranjes, Diego, Fritz and Naldo which added to Werder’s ‘Golden October’ and again improved Werder’s impressive record against Bochum. “I don’t think much of that record”, remarked Schaaf unimpressed. “Phases during which things are going well can change very quickly.” The could also include the Green-Whites recent poor run!

|
