Van Nistelrooy and Dudek speak English, Raúl is always watching out for me...

What was your impression of Madrid before you signed?
I had already played against them in the Bernabéu and I knew what this club meant. This is the best club in the world, past and present.

How did your signing come about?
My representative came to Madrid in the middle of the season to negotiate the deal and he brought me the paperwork, which I signed in Berlin.

Are you worried about the bed precendents set by Woodgate and Samuel in Madrid?
Madrid\'s style is to play attacking, happy football, thus making it more difficult for the defence. I am ready.

It\'s when everyone moves up off their line when the problems begin...
On one hand, it\'s always good that the ball isn\'t close to your goal. There\'s no danger in that. On the other, it\'s bad if the opponent steals the ball and there\'s no one back to defend. The key is to find the right balance.

You like to come up and attack, too!
I played along the left wing many times with Dortmund and had fun doing so. However, you should never abandon your position if playing as a centre-back.

What are your thoughts on Cannavaro?
He\'s one of the best. Learning from him has been a great experience so far.

Did you always want to be a centre-back?
I always played in the midfield as a kid, but I was moved into defence when I joined Borussia.

Why did your dad want you to do track and field?
My father was a professional track and field athlete in the \'50\'s and \'60\'s. He was the best German 3,000 metre and 1,000 metre runner. He wanted me to follow in his footsteps, but I started playing football when I was about 13 or 14.

What do you enjoy doing off the pitch?
I like to read. Footballers have a lot of free time, so it\'s important to stay active.

How many books did you bring with you for the preseason?
Two. One is \"El Zahir\" by Paulo Coelho, and the other is to help me learn Spanish.

Who is your favourite author?
I like Paulo Coelho and Gabriel García Márquez.

Not many footballers share your likes. Do you think football and everything that surrounds it is a little shallow?
I don\'t feel at all special. There are many players on the German national team who have finished their studies and gone on to do other things. Football is surrounded by many things; lots of flashes and lots of cameras. It\'s become a huge business, but when all is said and done, it\'s what happens on the pitch that matters; the sport itself.

What are your personal goals with Madrid?
The same as the club\'s. I want to win every title possible and play as many minutes possible.

The League or the Champions League?
The first goal is to win the League because you have to remain consistent for such a long time. To win the Champions League you also have to have a little luck.

Has Schuster told you what he expects of you?
We\'ve spoken about a few things. He has explained to me how special Real Madrid is and how hard it is to be a centre-back here.
|
