Owen Hargreaves says shyly: \"I\'ve never told him this but I used to have posters of David Beckham on the wall of my small room. I was 16 years old and I\'d just come to Munich from Calgary. I was staying in this youth hostel at the club, I couldn\'t speak a word of German and I ate nothing but schnitzel for the first six months. Life was pretty hard and lonely but I had Beckham on my wall. So I guess I was dreaming of tournaments like this even then.\"

In the summer of 1997 the 22-year-old Beckham could reflect on a season in which he had won the championship with Manchester United, his first full England cap and the Premiership\'s Young Player of the Year award. Hargreaves, meanwhile, was about to \"leave my mum and dad, my girlfriend, my mates and my school in Canada for a completely new life in a strange country. I was all alone when I came to Germany.\"

That life-changing journey, he explains, \"was down to coincidence. A coach called Thomas Niendorf used to work in East Germany. Once that fell apart he went to Canada where he ended up working with my team. I was 13 and wanted to emulate my dad. He came from Bolton and played semi-professional football in Canada. But Niendorf saw something more and, because he was German, I had a brief trial with Bayern in October 1996. The following March they invited my mum and dad to come over to see where I would be living and, when they gave their OK, I started this very different life.

\"I didn\'t even have email then, so I wrote these long letters home every week. My mum and dad would also phone me. I was only 16 but I was proud and didn\'t want to show them I was struggling in any way. So I came here with open arms, ready to embrace everything and learn the language. It was exciting but incredibly difficult.\"

At Bayern\'s training ground Hargreaves points out the flat brick building, housing the club\'s apprentices, which was his first home in Germany. He laughs when we glance at the adjoining Insider Bar, crammed with mullet-haired fans wedded to the holy trinity of Bayern Munich, sausages and heavy metal. \"It\'s actually much better now. It used to be pitch black inside with only a little light in the far corner. There was nothing but darkness and sausages on the menu - and schnitzel, of course.\"

Hargreaves played all over Bavaria on muddy village pitches for Bayern\'s youth teams. He was the \"strange Canadian kid\" who dared believe he could make it at a powerhouse of European football. Introduced to the German press as a first-team squad member in 2000, he was asked if he would prefer to talk in English. Hargreaves politely declined and displayed a command of German that echoed his composure and determination on the pitch.

Less than four years after his arrival he had established himself as a key presence in Bayern\'s midfield. He played crisply confident football while helping Bayern defeat Real Madrid in the semi-finals and then Valencia to win the Champions League in May 2001. An England call-up for the son of a Bolton fanatic and a Welsh mother became inevitable.

\"I\'ve been here a long time and I\'ve been very happy,\" Hargreaves says, looking up at the giant images of Franz Beckenbauer and Sepp Maier, of Gerd Müller and Uli Hoeness. \"I\'ve been fortunate to make my breakthrough at such a big club, where I\'ve played in some massive games. I\'ll always be grateful to Bayern. . .\"

Yet lately the attitude of the German superstars at the club has been less than reciprocal. When Bayern lost 3-2 at Wolfsburg in the Bundersliga last September, Oliver Kahn took time out from making some costly goalkeeping errors to lambast Hargreaves. \"We are lacking discipline in our defensive midfield area,\" Kahn said haughtily, \"because Hargreaves and some others are making too many mistakes. The way they ran around like hunted deer was unacceptable.\"

Hargreaves smiles grimly at the reminder, then coolly dissects the mood of both the ageing Kahn and his troubled club. \"You expect this at Bayern where there\'s so much politics and in-fighting. I\'m not German and I never will be, no matter how long I stay here. I\'m taking the spotlight away from German internationals when I play; and Kahn definitely enjoys the spotlight. But everyone knew I had nothing to do with those goals. I\'ve learnt how to handle those situations: they\'re not easy at the time but they make you a stronger person.\"

In his role as a perpetual outsider the 23-year-old Hargreaves has adjusted to disparate footballing cultures. \"I didn\'t know anyone when I came into the England camp and it took some time to settle down but I was struck by how different it was from Germany. At first I didn\'t dare approach David Seaman, Martin Keown and Teddy Sheringham because they were almost twice my age. It\'s just not the done thing in German football. But there was no divide among the England players and everybody was treated equal. And Becks made me feel so welcome. That was very important.

\"I\'ve since become mates with Ashley [Cole], Darius [Vassell], Stevie G and Kieron [Dyer]. Everything gelled during the World Cup. It was a real turning point because it was a chance to spend time with everyone. If you\'re playing a friendly you train on the Monday and Tuesday but you don\'t have time to impress anyone. So the World Cup was brilliant. I had a long stretch to show what I can do.\"

Hargreaves was selected for England\'s vital group match against Argentina, only for the highlight of his international career to be ruined after 10 minutes when Michael Owen clattered into him. \"I\'d been in very good shape physically,\" Hargreaves remembers, Sven-Goran Eriksson having praised him as England\'s fittest player of the tournament. \"We had friendlies against Cameroon and South Korea where I came out of nowhere and played really well. So it was fantastic to be picked against Argentina but terrible to be involved in a freak accident. I had a deep bone bruise and damaged ligaments. It was so disappointing because I had a real sharpness to my play.

\"But the World Cup was encouraging for England. We were just unlucky to draw Brazil in the quarters when our fatigue and injuries didn\'t help. We came away believing we could have made the final with a bit more luck.

Hargreaves\' favoured role - as a defensive midfielder - is likely to be filled by Nicky Butt. He has also played for England in Beckham\'s position on the right as well as on the troublesome left flank. \"I can play there in a diamond formation and, if Becks moves to a central role, then I\'m comfortable on the right. I\'m a modern midfielder, so I can play a lot of positions.\"

Hargreaves yearns for a move from Bayern to the Premiership. By way of consolation, of course, there is, always Bolton and a chance to join Sam Allardyce\'s increasingly cosmopolitan squad and his father\'s childhood team. \"My dad was so excited when he phoned the other day to tell me Bolton were signing Rivaldo. He was like a kid and I was saying, \'No way . . . get out of town . . . That\'s never happening.\' My dad is mad about Bolton but he understands. Bolton and Bayern are different worlds.\"

After 18 months in Munich Hargreaves\' long-standing Canadian girlfriend Janelle \"would love us to go to London. She can\'t speak German and all my friends at the club - Lizarazu, Sagnol and some of the South American lads - talk to us in English. So we\'re geared up for England.

Beckham, meanwhile, \"has made the right decision in staying at Madrid. I read that quote of his which said he still had some unfinished business and that\'s why I admire him so much. Just watching him in training is a big help and reminds me why I looked up to him. He would decide games with his free-kicks and I tried to do the same in all my teams as a kid.

\"I don\'t know how he copes with all that pressure because few athletes in the world are under the same scrutiny. He somehow manages to keep a level head, which is amazing, but I don\'t think too many of us would want to trade places with him.\"

Hargreaves looks back across the training pitch at the anonymous dormitory where he once covered a wall in photographs of Beckham. That lonely and nomadic teenager was dreaming of England even then. \"England would be good,\" he says. \"England would be cool.\"

|
