May 21, 2007

Mavs point guard possibilities

There is a strong possibility that Jason Terry, a good scorer but below-average defender and distributor, will not return as the mighty Mavs\' starting point guard next season.

erhaps Jet will become a Microwave-type offensive boost off the bench. Or maybe the Seattle native will be included in a package for his replacement or a pure shooting guard such as the Sonics\' Ray Allen.

The Mavs could hand the reins over to Devin Harris and hope he breaks through in his fourth season, which will be a contract year unless he agrees to an extension this off-season.

Or the Mavs could try to deal for one of the two big-name point guards who will be on the trading block: Chauncey Billups and Jason Kidd. Billups will opt out of the last year of his contract and could be a sign-and-trade option. There are rumblings that Kidd might ask for a trade if Vince Carter bolts New Jersey in free agency, and the Lakers are the leading contenders for Kidd if they\'re willing to part with young 7-footer Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom.

The Pistons and Nets would probably insist that Josh Howard and Harris be included in the Mavs\' offer. Don\'t think that makes the Mavs any better. They\'d have a great point guard, Dirk and a frightening lack of athleticism.

A less sexy, more practical option could be Milwaukee\'s Mo Williams, who is a free agent. He\'ll probably get more than the mid-level exception, so the Mavs would have to put together a sign-and-trade package for him. But they wouldn\'t have to mortgage their future to land a guy who proved last season (17.3 ppg, 6.1 apg) that he\'s a legit starting point guard.
|
