Very well said. Very mature observation.

(My apologies for posting in English. Some of the MMs here might have \"seen\" me on other Bayern bbs, and know that I cannot type Chinese. Please allow me to go on and post a long message in English.)

Don\'t get too upset about those so-called fans who cursed every player who left before their usefulness to the team has expired. I know it is easier said than done. I am a lot older than everyone on these football bbs, and have seen a lot more of the world than you boys and girls, It still make me sad to see people who are completely unable to respect anyone who do not do as they wish.

Some people watch football not because they love the game or even the team they support. The \"passion of fans\" is an excuse and justification to vent their frustrations with their sorry lives.

I once saw a movie with the following scene.

\"The Empress Ci Xi was upset about something. So she ordered several dozens of servant girls to be beaten to death outside her palace. But before they were dragged outside to be beaten to death, the girls all knelt and kowtow to the \"Old Budha\" to thank her for the privilege to serve her and for the honour of being sentenced to death by her personally.\"

I know this is not the best analogy, but somehow, whenever certain football fans demand complete loyalty from players of \"their\" teams, that scene keep coming to my mind. Now, that is \"loyalty\"! And of course, the \"Old Budha\" was always right, anyone who did not please her was totally worthless.

Obviously these fans cannot do anything more than scream and curse and call names. But these guys seems to still entertain the medieval concept that defines loyalty as \"when the emperor tells a subject to die, the subject has no alternative but to die\". Of course they are indulging the fantacy of being in the emperor\'s position. They would never imagine themselves as the subjects. To them, in football, being a fan make them emperors.

Anyway, Franz Beckenbauer retired at Hamburg, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge left for Inter , never to return to Bayern as a player, after years of rumours that he was about to leave Bayern for a foreign paycheck. Even Uli Hoeness briefly left Bayern for half a season for another team (I can\'t remember which) in an attempt to revive his injury ravaged career. They would all have been \"traitors\". Well, actually, perhaps not Hoesness, because when he left he was no longer useful as a player. Der Kaiser was no longer at his peak when he left, but still way better than most players.

As I said, I must be older than everyone on these football bbs. I also happened to be born in Hong Kong, and so was fortunate to be exposed to international football early. I became a fan of the then West Germany at the 1974 world cup, the first one with good television coverage in Hong Kong. Because of the 6 Bayern players among those world champions, I also started to follow Bayern. Other than 3 years in the late 1970\'s, I have not been able to watch Bayern play regularly. (I moved to the football wilderness called North America.) But I am still a Bayern fan. I watched the 1975 European Cup final (the predecessor of the Champions League) on TV, when Bayern beat Leeds to claim their 2nd Big Ears. I was at the San Siro in 2001 when Bayern finally regained the trophy after 25 years. I know I will still be there, lifespan permitting, when Bayern claim their fifth, although I hope I don\'t have to wait for another 25 years.

I just smile when some kids call themselves \"senior\" fans for having been Bayern fans for 10 years. (It certainly isn\'t their fault that they were born after Der Kaiser, or perhaps even after Rummenigge, retired from playing football. Personally, I dare not take myself too seriously as a fan, despite my old age, because I know there are other fans around who have watched Fritz Walter played football.) I am sure I would not pass the test as a \"real\" football fan , or a \"real\" Bayern fan, in the eyes of some young football experts on the Chinese football bbs. I happen to \"ride the fence\" sometimes and like other teams now and then. (I call it being married to Bayern and having an occasional affair with another team. ) I also have favorite players I care deeply about. And I wonder how many of the righteous, loyal fans who scream and curse the \"traitors\" would still be screaming and cursing for the love of Bayern in 25 years\' time.

Not all of my favorite players over the years are German or played for Bayern, although many are and many did. Lahm is one of my favorites among currently active players. I have been a Bayern fan long before Lahm was born. I have seen my favorite players come and go from my fovorite team(s). I am sure, when Lahm leaves Bayern, I will still support Bayern, and I will continue to care about him, whichever team he plays for. Wherever he goes, I wish him the best.

.S. I wish Lahm had handled this contract situation better than he did, but that is a different topic. He has never given the impression of being an undecisive person, but rather someone who knows what he wants. The decision to leave Bayern must be a very difficult one for him. That is why, I think, he was so undecisive--and I just hope he and Bayern can stay on good terms after the parting of ways, the way Elber and Makaay stay on good terms wtih Bayern.
