<>Mavericks\' roster breakdown
<>09:50 PM CDT on Saturday, May 21, 2005
<>By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News
<>Contracts? Not a problem. The Mavericks have their core signed long term.
<>Age? Not a problem. Almost all of their best players are in their 20\'s.
<>atience? Well, it\'s been a problem in the past. But the Mavericks are genuinely hopeful that management will give this crew a chance to improve on a season that was fun while it lasted and promising for the future.
<>\"All this team needs,\" said Josh Howard, \"is time to marinate.\"
<>Which puts the onus on chef/owner Mark Cuban, who has been more partial to microwave meals than taking the time for a team to blend into a tasty concoction.
<>Cuban is adamant that he likes the makeup of this team as it moves forward.

\"I\'m excited about next year already,\" Cuban said. \"I knew after last season we had to make changes. I feel 1,000 percent better about this team.\"

There will be tweaks to the makeup of the Mavericks. But rather than the extreme makeover of last season, when nine new faces showed up, it may be more like dabbing on some new makeup.

With that, here\'s a look at the roster, with groupings that will make up the recipe for next season and beyond.

MEAT AND POTATOES
You can\'t have a tasty stew without these basic parts.

F Dirk Nowitzki

Signed through 2007-08 ($13.843 million in 2005-06)

Age: 26

What happened: Had his best season but admitted he was subpar in the playoffs.

Stock: A big blue-chip gainer

The future: After finishing third in MVP voting, he\'s turning this into his team. Not that there weren\'t rough spots. He called out teammates in the playoffs, creating some tension. But that may not be such a bad thing. Great players want to be paired with warriors. He expects more out of himself and his teammates.

G/F Josh Howard

Signed through 2006-07 ($923,880 in 2005-06)

Age: 25

What happened: Became a solid swingman who can contribute in all areas.

Stock: Rising fast

The future: He probably will be the best value in the NBA next season, making less than a million on his rookie contract but capable of becoming a consistent 15-point, eight-rebound performer on a potentially very good team. And he\'s growing a mean streak, too. The only concern is how much the Mavericks are going to have to pay him after this season.

G/F Jerry Stackhouse

Signed through 2006-07 ($8.367 million in 2005-06)

Age: 30

What happened: He adapted to the sixth-man role and was a gritty leader.

Stock: Paying dividends

The future: Is there a place for him in the starting lineup next season? That will be one of the big questions in training camp. Antawn Jamison was sixth man for a year, then told the club he no longer wanted that job. Stackhouse is a starter in the NBA. He filled a needed role this season and did so admirably. He\'s earned a bigger part.

G Devin Harris

Signed through 2007-08 ($2.947 million in 2005-06)

Age: 22

What happened: Began season as a starter, then settled into a backup role.

Stock: Set to skyrocket

The future: Once he learns that there is a different speed than 200 mph, he\'s going to be a wonderful point guard. The skills are there to be a scoring point, but he also has the basic instinct to look for his teammates. A training camp under Avery Johnson will do wonders for him. The only question is when will he become the starter.

G Marquis Daniels

Signed through 2008-09 ($5.393 million in 2005-06)

Age: 24

What happened: Struggled with injuries and ailments most of the season.

Stock: Flat

The future: Throw this season out. He never got on track until the very end. After signing a big contract last summer, he needs a big training camp more than anybody to find his role in Johnson\'s system. Everybody knows he can score. But the key is getting back to doing the other things on the court, which will be his ticket to more playing time.

SALT, PEPPER, GARLIC
Any good dish has to have seasoning. These should be part of the mix.

C Erick Dampier

Signed through 2010-11 ($8.665 million in 2005-06)

Age: 29

What happened: Turbulent debut in Dallas included a few valleys, one dominant stretch.

Stock: Up and down

The future: If the Mavericks don\'t get more consistency out of their $60-odd million investment, it will go down as a big mistake. Dampier gets paid to rebound, block shots and be a presence in the middle. Scoring is a bonus. It\'s not his primary function. The Mavericks will continue their transition and need him to be a more dependable asset.

G Jason Terry

Signed through 2005-06 ($6.667 million)

Age: 28

What happened: A scorer, he never seemed comfortable as a playmaking point guard.

Stock: Solid returns

The future: He\'s a great shooter. The problem is that he\'s not Avery Johnson\'s type of point guard. And that last, lingering vision of him backing away from Steve Nash will haunt the team for months. Still, he\'s a positive offensive force and has the added value of an expiring contract. There\'s no reason not to keep him in the fold.

G/F Michael Finley

Signed through 2007-08 ($15.938 million in 2005-06)

Age: 32

What happened: For fifth straight year, scoring dipped; rebounding was a career low.

Stock: Dropping

The future: With nearly $52 million invested in him over the next three years, the Mavericks need productivity from Finley. But how that is attained is the question. Can Finley handle the move to sixth man? It\'s not an easy transition. He\'s a scorer who can\'t score like he used to but still has moments when he can light up the opponent.

F Keith Van Horn

Signed through 2005-06 ($15.694 million)

Age: 29

What happened: Fit right in after trade, showing good toughness and skills.

Stock: Fair returns

The future: On the last year of a monster contract, Van Horn will be looking to have a strong season to justify another nice deal to take him through the meat of his career. The Mavericks could benefit from this. He helped them after his arrival, and he gives them a nice complement to Nowitzki. For a shooter, he\'s extremely athletic around the bucket.

CONDIMENTS
If all else fails, kill it with ketchup. These will be used if the planned recipe goes bad.

C Shawn Bradley

Signed through 2007-08 ($4.5 million in 2005-06)

Age: 33

What happened: He had the least productive season of his career.

Stock: Time to sell?

The future: There are times when Bradley can help the Mavericks. He alters the way opponents play. But his inconsistency has worn thin on the new coach and with Dampier ensconced at center, there may not be much time for Bradley. Owner Mark Cuban is a big fan, but it seems like the chances of him producing are going to be few and far between.

C Pavel Podkolzin

Signed through 2007-08 ($1.142 million in 2005-06)

Age: 20

What happened: He actually got into five games, which is five more than expected.

Stock: Initial Purchase Option

The future: It\'s big, like he is. The 7-5 Russian has such a soft shooting touch from 15 feet that the Mavericks are excited about it. He moves well for his size, and they hope a summer of learning (if there\'s not a lockout) will help him become a capable backup to Dampier next season. His size makes him a valued asset for the future.

C D.J. Mbenga

Signed through 2005-06 ($880,000)

Age: 24

What happened: His athleticism and size couldn\'t make up for his inexperience.

Stock: Penny stock could still rise.

The future: You see the great body and the way he runs and the 7-foot size and you just know there\'s a great basketball player in there somewhere. But learning the NBA game has been slow, and the Mavericks have more invested in the younger and bigger Podkolzin. Everybody\'s pulling for him, but he needs to show more.

WANT FRIES WITH THAT?
These are ingredients that may have to go.

G/F Tariq Abdul-Wahad

Signed through 2006-07 ($7.313 million in 2005-06)

Age: 30

What happened: Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Stock: Bankrupt

The future: The salary is only partially guaranteed this year and next. But the Mavericks still would love to sever ties if he\'d accept a buyout. If not, he\'ll continue to collect paychecks and roam the earth.

G Darrell Armstrong

Unrestricted free agent

Age: 36

What happened: Became a very functional backup point guard.

Stock: Still good for shareholders

The future: The Mavericks loved his energy in spot situations, and he could be retained at a palatable salary. But with Harris and Terry, Armstrong\'s playing opportunities might be better with another team.

F/C Alan Henderson

Unrestricted free agent

Age: 32

What happened: A healthy season made this true pro a key contributor.

Stock: It could split soon.

The future: He was as solid as anybody, getting plenty from his ability and rarely making mistakes. He\'s the sort of backup big man every team can use. But if the Mavericks can get younger and more athletic at that position, who knows?

|
