<>Rookie Rice has size, shot to make Mavs
<>osted on Thu, Jul. 07, 2005

By ART GARCIA

STAR-TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER

LAS VEGAS - Two years ago the Mavericks went into summer league with a good feeling about an undrafted rookie named Marquis Daniels.

This summer\'s version could be Darius Rice.

The buzz on the wiry 6-foot-10 forward has been positive, and Rice has a chance to stick in October.

\"He\'s got a shot,\" Mavericks coach Avery Johnson said Wednesday after his squad opened the Reebok Vegas Summer League with a 89-66 victory over New Jersey.

Rice\'s shot certainly won\'t keep him from being invited to training camp. His quick and smooth release impressed former Mavs coach Don Nelson, who was in attendance Wednesday. But, as is the case for just about anyone who expects to play for Johnson, it will take a lot more than a nice stroke to land a job.

\"He\'s got to play defense,\" Johnson said. \"But it\'s not a bad skill in the NBA to be able to make shots consistently.\"

Rice scored 12 points in 15 minutes against New Jersey, knocking down 4 of 6 from the field, including 2 of 3 from beyond the arc, and grabbed two rebounds.

His skill set is obvious. The nephew of NFL receiving great Jerry Rice, the 22-year-old is long, agile and quick for his size. Concerns center on his strength and rebounding ability. Rice led the University of Miami in scoring each of his four seasons (2000-2004) and spent last season in the National Basketball Developmental League. He averaged 10 points and four rebounds for the Fort Myers Flame.

\"I bring a lot of athleticism and ability to make shots,\" said Rice, the career record holder in starts (113) at Miami. \"On the defensive end, [Johnson] played my inside and outside, and I just have to use my strengths.

\"He wants me to play hard on defense, because Dallas has a lot of offensive guys.\"

The Mavs could have as many as five new players on the roster next season, which is one of the reasons Rice\'s agent contacted the Mavs regarding a possible spot on the summer league team.

\"I watched a lot of tape on those guys,\" Rice said. \"I thought I could be a good fit.\"

Johnson envisions Rice as a small forward, but he could play some power forward during summer league. With his size and 3-point range, Rice is a potential matchup problem for defenders.

\"I\'ve been an offensive player most of my life, but, to get in the NBA, it will be because of defense,\" Rice said.

Popeye eyes return

Former Mavs forward Popeye Jones hopes to begin his coaching career with the team that traded for his draft rights 12 years ago. Jones is on Avery Johnson\'s bench as an assistant during summer league but has yet to be hired full time.

\"My friendship with Avery, and this being the franchise that first gave me an opportunity, make this my first choice,\" said Jones, who retired after the season. \"It\'s a dream of mine to be a head coach, and I\'m willing to work my way up.

\"Even though this is summer league, it sure felt like a real NBA game to me, being on the bench for the first time as a coach.\"

If hired, Jones would replace Mark Bryant on the developmental staff and work primarily with the team\'s forwards and centers.

Podkolzin arrives late

Second-year center Pavel Podkolzin missed the summer league opener after having an MRI exam on his right shoulder Wednesday in Dallas. He joined the team midway through the New Jersey game.

Podkolzin said he injured the shoulder practicing with the Russian national team last month but said it\'s not a serious injury.

---------------------------------

Darius Rice

A few notes on the other teams: Sebastian Telfair is overrated. Knicks are in some serious trouble. Ha, the Chinese giant is actually pretty good. Travis Outlas embarassed everyone playing in the Blazers Knicks game. Christian Dreher (sp.) looked awful out there. Absoutely awful.

M\'Benga-- I was amazed by him. In person he is an absolute giant. He was at least 2 inches taller than everyone else on the court, and he takes up a lot of space. He\'s still awkwrd and seems to be playing arhythmically. He really dominated the game forabout 70% of the time he was in. During a 7 minute span he blocked 2 shots, and forced no fewer than 5 shots to be short. He was everywhere and I was really surprised by how quickly he moves across the lane which is good for a shotblocker. I dont know if it waill transfer at all to veteran players but you could tell players were afraid of m\'Bnga. It also seemed like AJ was on top of the defense most of time. Especially wihen DJ was in the game, players would get into the paint only to be body to body with Michael Harris or Josh Powell who had their ams outstretched and DJ ready to pounce a few feet away. DJ had some offense in the second half of the game and for a few seconds was the most dominant player of the game offeniively. He came in for a hard dunk, and then a funny looking layup/hok thing that went in, and then an offbalance jumper from about 7 feet, then swung across the lane for a skyhook thing. On the other side he got a mean block but got hit in either the groin or the inner thigh and took about 20 seconds to get back up the court-- that kinda bugged me-- but with 4 seconds left on the clock he got the ball dropped at his feet and he got fouled and made at least the first FT. He must have had 8-10 points in a span of 3-4 minutes. He was strong on the defensive glass, but wasnt facing a lot of duress. He did miss 2 offensive boards that were obviously his to be had though. He watched the shooter and backed off instead of watching the ball and fighting for position. With his stength, it was obvious that he could have gotten the boards. He\'s a little more refined offensively, its hard to tell but he looks a little more solid on defensive rebounds and the main thing is he\'s really matured what shots he looks to block and his body control when he goes up. He went for contests instead of blocks, he stayed on the gound a couple of times when he wouldnt have last year and he seemed to control his body in the air better so on at least one play he didnt get the body contact that would have gotten him a foul.

Pavel didnt play It was funny at the player announcemens because they got everything wrong. Daniels was \"Daniel\", they announced Pavel even though he wasnt ther. They also announced Mark Mcguirre was coaching the knicks, and Lawrence Frank who didnt appear until much later, was coaching the nets. When Pavel was announced M\'Benga said \"what?\" to Harris, which I heard about 20 feet away. I really wanted to see Pavel play, but he showed up in casual attire near the end of the game and never played.

Michael Harris was good-- dissapeared for a while and got yanked for a stupid play but he was solid. it\'s obvious that he has a fundamental understanding of how to play the game. He has a block that he beat DJ to that he sent back o halfcourt, and he played defense hard. His shots seemed to spiral out though and I dont have the box score in front of me so I cant provide numbers. He looked a little skinnier but does need to lose some weight. He also doesnt move a whole lot-- he\'s smart/efficent with his movements which is good becuase at the moment he isnt that quick. He always stayed in front of guys, knocked some balls clear and got the block without ever looking like the flash.

Devin Harris looked good-- like DJ, he was above average most of the game but spectacular for a few minutes. In the first half he had a whoile were he was finding every open man. Michael Harris and Roger powell both fumbled passes, and we shots FTs about 4-5 times, or else he would have had 6-7 assists in that time span.A little scare wen Harris was undercut by a Net spare-- he went horizontal and landed square on his tailbone but got up okay.

Daniels really came on in the second half. In the first half he was hesitant about the defense. He still is silky smooth when driving, he still appears xactly where balls are flying during broken plays and he still is an average jumpshooter. It looked better than last year but still not great. He did have an awesome time drawing fouls.

Josh Powell started the game well and really hustled through the entire game. i\'d compare him most to Eduardo Naera as far as what he did in this game. Hs defense wasnt astounding, he got a few nice hustle boards and a few fouls from playing a little too pushy. He could replace Huenderson, but Hendu is better at this point in his career.

Roger Powell didnt do much at all. Incredibly handsome though and I got to talk with him during the Portland game.

Darius Rice wasnt terribly impressive, but he wasnt unimpressive either. He\'s pretty quick, he\'s tall and in the second half he was really clicking on his threes. He needs to work on his defense and his rebounding is atrocius. That said, the best team we had on the foor was Harris/Daniels/Harris/Rice/M\'Benga. because Rice filled the kickout guy role, while Michael Harris and DJ played 20 feet tall down low with the guards passing fairly fluidly.

Lopez played defense, but was thoroughl unimpressive.

Gervin realy caught my eye-- he looked like the smartest player out there for most of the time h was playing. The guy is special even though he\'s really small.

The game was racked open to 10 points in the second quarter when Harris was making all sorts of asssts while DJ was contesting all the shots. In the third the Mavs started with a lot of TOs-- Devin traveled, then we got the steal and Daniels traveled on the fastbreak. A couple of bad passes and we started the third really sloppy, and the lead was only 6. we started playing a lot sharper on both ends and pushed the lead to 9-11 and kept it there until halfway into the fourth when DJ \"Olauwon\" M\'Benga took over.

A few other notes: Nelson, his wife and the African scout were there. AJ walked by twice without even acklowledging Nelsin. AJ did talk quite a bit with Mark Aguirre, who coached the Knicks squad. Isaiah Thomas has a wonderful smile and its hard to imagine that he is incopetent when he flashes it. Devin Harris signed autographs and played NBA 2k6 in the lobby with kids. Lawrence Frank was really drunk. The less creepy of the two Maloofs was at the game with two women who were obviously Vegas escorts....

sorry about the typing errors-- Im typing this in a Las Vegas hotel room with their internet TV service-- the keyboard is awkward, I cant read the text very well and the wireless element of the keyboard bliks out some times.
|
