<>BERLIN -- Maybe, soon, they will truly love and respect Michael Ballack in Germany. Then again, maybe not.<br>Ballack, the captain of the German team, played heroically in Germany's quarter-final victory over Argentina last Friday. He provided the cross that led to Germany's equalizing goal. He was clearly injured and limping in extra time and carried on heroically. After hobbling to the sideline for treatment, he went back out and scored one of Germany's penalty kicks in the shootout.<br>He will lead Germany against Italy in their semi-final today.</P>

<>His fine work should make Ballack adored. But Ballack has a complicated relationship with the German public and the soccer establishment, and they with him. There are two creeping criticisms of him being muttered, and they speak volumes about the delicate state of the German national psyche today.<br>The knocks against Ballack are that he is East German and that he's polite.</P>

<>Ballack is what's called an Ossi. In Germany, there are Wessis, those who were born and grew up in the former West Germany, and Ossis, those from the old, communist East Germany.<br>Many Wessis think Ossis -- especially those such as Ballack who have been successful -- are greedy mercenaries who spent so long under communist deprivation that they are shallow and addicted to money. They're superficial people, or so the thinking goes. Also, it is believed by some that the Ossi loyalty to Germany is weak. They grew up Communists, not Germans.</P>

<>Ballack will be playing for Chelsea in England in the fall, after seeing out his contract with Bayern Munich. He'll be paid about the equivalent of $13-million a year to play in England. For some Wessis, that's proof Ballack is after cash and comfort. They think a true German hero, especially the captain of the national team, would instinctively continue his career in Germany.<br>A woman I met here, aged about 50 and a season-ticket holder for Werder Bremen, took ages to answer my question about her opinion of Ballack. "He is an Ossi," she said, and she kept thinking how to summarize him. Eventually, her lip curled slightly and she used a German phrase to describe him. She couldn't translate it adequately and apologized before going to ask a friend, "a professor," for the correct English. When she came back, written on a piece of paper was "rootless mercenary."<br>Ballack was born in a small town in East Germany and, because he was a soccer star as a child, moved with his family to what was then called Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1983. As with all sports prodigies of the old East German system, he was nurtured in a bubble of privilege. He was still a teenager when the Wall fell and East Germany disappeared into the new Germany. Everyone here knows the details of his background and can recite them with ease. They fixate on them. Added to the suspicion about his East German roots, there is the matter of his demeanour. That's what the soccer pundits and experts question.</P>

<P>Ballack is tall, dark and handsome. He is Germany's David Beckham: an icon of style and cool. His face sells products, but his market as an icon is young women who admire his leading-man looks. He still hasn't sold himself to the commentators in print and on television who brood over the German team. To some -- especially, Gunter Netzer, the former player who is now a sort of Don Cherry of German soccer -- Ballack lacks the manly qualities to be a true German leader.<br>For Netzer, and many German men, the national captain should be tougher: the German equivalent of a broth-of-a-boy, all guts, beer drinking, swearing and a bit boorish. The phrase Netzer uses to rescue the ideal captain was translated for me as "real men with bad manners."</P>

<P>Ballack is known as a nice man, a little distant from his teammates and the public, but very well mannered. He says "thank you" in interviews and when he gives his autograph. Before Ballack ascended to captain the German team, the dominant player was goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, known for his temper and for animal roars at fellow players and for leaving his pregnant wife for a waitress. For Netzer and many German men, Kahn is a natural leader -- not Ballack.<br>For those German men who fetishize beer drinking and boorishness, Ballack is too aloof, too pretty, and there is too much of the metrosexual about him. He lacks the right stuff to represent the country. If he leads the team to a World Cup championship, at home, all might be forgiven. But that's no certainty. It's all very German and very complicated.</P>

<P>Either way, Ballack will abandon German league soccer for Chelsea, where nobody will care about the complicated baggage that Germans believe he carries.</P>
